Higher education in Brazil has seen a particular rift between economic classes, despite intense interventionist measures to equalize. This painting explores the unintended consequences behind the concept of affirmative action, showing the institution (as represented by the structural columns) designed against those entering via quota, yet accommodating the expansion of the room span. The commentary reflects on the poverty of education provided by the State, and the failure of remedial policies to correct for initial heavy-handedness. Subtle detailing in the background reveals shrouded slums behind the windows, alluding to the separation of elites and the decided-for.
